The Strength Training for Runners Course with Rich Blagrove

Course Content

The inclusion of strength training activities in the program of an endurance runner is likely to enhance performance, may reduce the risk of developing an overuse injury, and is beneficial for general health. This interactive two-day workshop is designed to introduce runners, coaches, and clinicians to the fundamental principles of strength training for runners, with a focus on how a range of basic exercises should be coached, prescribed, and progressed. The workshop is a mixture of both theory and practical and will give attendees the ‘hands-on’ experience they require to introduce important strength training activities into their practice.

Course Aims

• Understand why strength training is important for endurance runners of all ages and competitive status
• Demonstrate a range of strength training exercises that enhance performance and lower the risk of sustaining overuse injuries
• Design a basic strength training program that can be incorporated into the training routine of an endurance runner

More about your course instructor:

Richard is a Senior Lecturer in Physiology and the Programme Leader for the MSc Strength and Conditioning at Loughborough University. Richard’s research investigates the physiological factors that underpin performance in endurance running and how strength-training exercise can be used as a tool to improve the metabolic cost of running. He is also interested in health-related issues associated with endurance sports, particularly the consequences of chronic low energy availability on musculoskeletal health. Richard has been an Accredited Strength and Conditioning Coach since 2008 and a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist since 2009. Alongside his academic roles, he has provided strength and conditioning coaching support to numerous athletes over the last 15 years including several endurance runners who have competed and won medals at major international championships.
