Why Girona is made for cycling

If you like cycling, chances are you’ve heard of Girona. The city has become a favourite among professional and amateur cyclists, and it’s easy to see why. Within a short distance of the city, you have quiet roads, long climbs, small villages, beautiful countryside and plenty of places to stop for coffee.

It’s also a great place to spend time off the bike, which makes it more than just a cycling destination.

So what makes Girona such a good place to ride?

There are roads for every kind of ride.

One of the best things about cycling in Girona is the variety.

You can leave the city and quickly find yourself on quiet country roads, rolling through the Catalan countryside with very little traffic. From shorter rides to long days in the saddle, there are routes to suit different levels and goals.

The Climbs

Rocacorba. Els Àngels. Sant Grau. Girona has plenty of them.

Some are long and steady. Others are shorter but steep enough to make you question your life choices somewhere near the top. The great thing is that you don’t have to be an elite cyclist to enjoy them. You can choose your route, set your own pace and enjoy the satisfaction of reaching the top.

Catalan villages, countryside and everything in between

Routes take you through small villages, farmland and forests, with plenty of places to stop along the way. That’s part of the charm of cycling in Girona: you get to explore the region at the pace of a bike. You can spend the morning climbing through the countryside, stop for lunch in a small Catalan village and still be back in Girona in time for an afternoon coffee.

And speaking of coffee…

The obligatory coffee stops

Cycling in Girona comes with an unofficial rule: The coffee stop is part of the ride.

Cafés become meeting points for cyclists, places to refuel, recover and inevitably discuss the ride you’ve just done.

A quick coffee can easily become lunch, lunch can become another coffee.

And suddenly your three-hour ride has turned into an entire day. But that’s part of what makes cycling here so enjoyable!

A city with a cycling culture

Cycling doesn’t feel out of place in Girona. It’s become a well-established base for professional cyclists, and you’ll regularly see groups of riders heading out into the surrounding countryside. There are bike shops, cafés and services catering to cyclists, as well as routes designed to make the most of the surrounding area.

At the same time, Girona itself gives you plenty to do once the bike is back in the hotel.

You can explore the old town, walk along the River Onyar, enjoy Catalan food or simply sit somewhere and watch the cyclists come back into the city.

So, Why Girona?

Maybe it’s the quiet roads, the climbs, the villages, the coffee stops or the fact that you can finish a long ride and still have somewhere great to spend the evening.

Probably, it’s all of it. Girona offers the kind of cycling trip where the riding is the main event, but there’s plenty to enjoy when you’re off the bike too.

And that’s exactly why we choose it year after year for the Physio Cycling Camp.

What if you could spend a week riding Girona while also developing your clinical knowledge?

Our Physio Cycling Camp in Girona combines guided rides through the region with four mornings of clinical education led by Bryan McCullough of The Bike The Body.

You’ll get to experience Girona as a cyclist, while learning more about the relationship between the cyclist, the bike and the demands of the sport.

Six nights. Guided rides. Clinical education. Great food. Plenty of cycling.

And, naturally, a few coffee stops.
